Solar Panels for Tents: Folding Panels That Keep Phones, Lights and a Cooler Running

Solar panels for tents are a different product from the glass modules on a house roof. They fold, they weigh a few pounds to twenty, they shrug off rain, and they plug into a power station or a 12V battery without any wiring tools. At a walk-in site you want the lightest panel that charges your gear; at a drive-in site with a fridge and a fan, you want 200 to 400W and a station to store it. This collection covers both ends.

There are 31 products here from Jackery, Rich Solar, BLUETTI, Mango Power and Anker SOLIX, priced from $109 for a 40W folding panel to $800 for a two-panel charging kit with a controller. Several carry an IP67 or IP68 rating, and the Rich Solar briefcase kits build a waterproof controller into the panel.

How to choose tent camping solar panels

  • What you are charging. Phones, a headlamp and a small lantern need 40 to 100W. The Jackery SolarSaga 40 Air weighs 1.98 lb and is IP68 rated, so it can hang on the tent fly. A 12V cooler or a CPAP through a power station calls for the BLUETTI 200W Portable Panel or larger.
  • Weight versus watts. The Mango Power 200W Portable Panel gives 200W at 21.6 lb with a fold-flat magnetic design; the Anker SOLIX PS400 doubles that to 400W for a car-camping base. Carry weight only matters if the panel leaves the trunk.
  • Station or battery. Folding panels from Jackery, BLUETTI, Mango and Anker are made to feed a power station. If you are charging a loose 12V battery in a truck bed, the Rich Solar MEGA 100W Briefcase Kit has a 10A controller built in and clips straight to the terminals.
  • Weather. Look for the ingress rating: IP68 on the Jackery SolarSaga 40 Air and 100 Prime, IP67 on the Mango 200W. A panel left out through an afternoon storm should not be the thing that ends the trip.

Setup and usage tips

  • Match the panel to your station's input before you leave. Each brand's panel connector and voltage suit its own stations; a Jackery panel fits a Jackery, an Anker PS400 fits Anker SOLIX. Adapters exist, but check them at home.
  • Face the panel into the sun and re-aim it at lunch. A folding panel lying flat in the shade of the tent makes a fraction of its rating; the BLUETTI panels include a kickstand for angling.
  • Charge the station at home first. Solar at a campsite is for keeping up, not for filling an empty 2kWh battery on the first morning.
  • Bring a cable long enough to put the panel in sun while the station stays in the shade. Batteries charge better cool.
  • Planning a longer trip with a fridge? Run the Solar Kit Calculator with your gear list and the ZIP code of the campground to see how many panel watts you really need.

Frequently asked questions

Can a solar panel charge a phone directly? Charging straight from the panel only works while the sun is out. The reliable approach is panel to power station, then station to phone. That way the phone charges after dark too.

How many watts do I need for a 12V cooler? A compressor cooler uses roughly 300 to 500Wh a day. A 200W panel in decent sun replaces that; a 100W panel gets close on a clear day and falls behind in overcast.

Is a flexible panel good for tent camping? The MEGA 100 FLEX is best mounted on a vehicle or rooftop tent shell. For a panel you set up and take down each day, a folding briefcase or Jackery-style panel is easier to handle.
