100W Solar Panel Guide: What One Panel Charges and How Many You Need

A 100W solar panel is the unit most small solar systems are counted in. One keeps a 12V battery healthy in a stored boat or trailer; two or three run a compressor fridge and lights in a van; a folding one refills a portable power station on a weekend trip. Because the size is so common, it comes in more formats than any other: rigid framed, slim, flexible, briefcase and folding portable.

This collection has 11 panels from Rich Solar, Sungold Power, Jackery, Anker and EcoFlow. In-stock prices start at $110 for the rigid Rich Solar MEGA 100 and top out around $250 for folding bifacial panels from Jackery and Anker with IP68 ratings.

How to choose a 100 w solar panel

  • What it will charge. For a lead-acid or lithium 12V battery through a charge controller, a rigid 12V panel such as the RICH SOLAR MEGA 100W 12V Rigid is the standard choice. For a power station, use a folding panel with a cable that plugs straight into the station, like the Jackery SolarSaga 100 Air (bifacial, 23% cells, IP68).
  • Where it will sit. A narrow roof strip between a vent and an air conditioner fits the MEGA 100W SLIM at 50.0 x 15.7 inches. A curved fiberglass roof or a boat hardtop takes the MEGA 100W FLEX, 4.8 lb and able to bend to the surface.
  • Panel voltage. Nearly every panel here is 12V-class. If your battery bank is 24V, the Sungold Power 100W 24V Monocrystalline Solar Panels Kit is designed for that voltage from the start.
  • Weight for carrying. The Anker SOLIX PS100 Bifacial weighs 6.2 lb; the SolarSaga 100 Prime and 100 Air fold flat. Rigid panels are for roofs, not for hauling to a campsite.
  • Controller included or not. Bare panels need a charge controller between panel and battery. The MEGA 100W Briefcase Portable Panel has one built in, which makes it a complete 100w solar panel kit for a single battery.

Sizing tips

  • Expect 300 to 500Wh per panel per summer day in most of the US, and roughly half that in winter. That figure, not the 100W label, is what you size against.
  • Use the Solar Kit Calculator to turn your appliance list and ZIP code into a panel count; it also sizes the battery and inverter to match.
  • One panel maintains, three panels run. A single 100W module offsets a fridge's daily draw only in strong sun; plan three for a van fridge, lights and charging with a margin for cloudy days.
  • Wire identical panels together. Mixing a 100W panel with a 150W or 200W panel in the same string drags output down to the weakest module.
  • Bifacial folding panels gain from bright ground. Set the SolarSaga 100 Air or SOLIX PS100 on light gravel or sand and tilt them toward the sun.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best 100w solar panel for an RV roof? A rigid IP67 module like the MEGA 100 for a flat roof, or the MEGA 100 SLIM when you are fitting panels between roof fixtures. Both are 12V-class and pair with a standard MPPT controller.

Can a 100W panel charge a portable power station? Yes, slowly. On a good day it puts back 300 to 500Wh, which fully recharges a small station or tops up a 1 to 2kWh one. Use a 200W panel or two 100W panels for larger stations.

Do I need a charge controller with a 100W panel? With a bare panel and a battery, yes. With a power station, no, because the controller is inside the station. The Briefcase panel is the exception among bare panels since its controller is built in.

Panels ship free to the mainland US from our brand partner warehouses, usually within a few business days, with 30-day returns. Call us if you are unsure whether one 100 w solar module or three is the right start.
