1000 Watt Solar Panel System: What It Runs and How to Size One

A 1000 watt solar panel system is the point where solar stops being a phone charger and starts running a home-sized load: a full-size fridge, lights, a water pump, a laptop and a TV, day after day. In most of the US a 1,000W array produces roughly 4 to 5kWh on a clear day, which is why this class is the usual starting size for a travel trailer, a tiny home or a weekend cabin that has no grid connection.

This collection currently holds one complete system, the RICH SOLAR 1600 Watt 24V Complete Solar Kit, from $4,700. It is deliberately a step above the 1kW mark: eight MEGA 200W panels for a 1,600W array, two ALPHA 4 lithium batteries totalling 5.12kWh, a 60A MPPT charge controller and a 3,000W 24V inverter. Everything arrives as one order and is matched to work together, so there is no controller or cable guesswork.

How to choose a 1kW-class solar system

  • Daily energy, not peak watts. Write down each appliance's watts and hours per day. A cabin with a fridge, LED lights, a well pump cycling a few times and two laptops typically lands between 2,500 and 4,000Wh. A 1,600W array covers that with margin on a sunny day, and the 5.12kWh bank in the Rich Solar kit carries you through one cloudy day.
  • Inverter continuous rating. The inverter sets what you can switch on at the same time. The 3,000W unit in this kit runs a microwave and a fridge together, or a small window air conditioner, but not an electric range or a water heater.
  • System voltage. A 24V bank halves the current compared with 12V for the same power, which means thinner cables and less heat. That is why a 1,000W-and-up solar panel system is normally built at 24V or 48V rather than 12V.
  • Room to grow. The 60A MPPT controller and the 24V bus leave headroom to add batteries later if your usage grows, which is cheaper than replacing a controller that is already at its limit.

Sizing tips

  • Use the Solar Kit Calculator first. Enter your appliances and ZIP code and it returns the battery, inverter and panel size for your sun hours, which tells you whether 1,600W is right or you should plan larger.
  • Measure your roof before ordering. Eight 200W panels need a clear, mostly shade-free surface; on a trailer that often means a mix of roof and ground-mounted panels.
  • Count winter sun, not summer. Northern states can lose half their daily production in December, so a system that is comfortable in July may need the battery bank doubled for year-round use.
  • Keep high-draw heating appliances on propane. Space heaters, water heaters and ranges eat a 5kWh battery in an hour or two; a 1000w solar panel system is at its best on fridges, pumps, lighting and electronics.
  • Plan the battery location. Lithium batteries prefer to be charged above freezing, so an insulated compartment or a heated interior space extends their life.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1,000 watts of solar enough to run a refrigerator full time? Yes. A modern full-size fridge uses about 1 to 1.5kWh a day, a quarter of what a 1,000W array makes on a clear day. The rest is available for lights, pumps and electronics.

Why is the only kit in this collection 1,600W rather than exactly 1,000W? Real-world output runs 20 to 30 percent under the nameplate figure because of heat, angle and wiring losses. A 1,600W array delivers 1,000W-class power in practice, with enough surplus to refill a 5.12kWh bank in a single day.

Can I add more panels to this kit later? Ask us before you do. The 60A controller has a defined input limit, and the correct expansion path depends on how the existing eight panels are wired. We can confirm what fits.

This kit ships free to the mainland US from the brand partner warehouse, usually within a few business days, and is covered by our 30-day return policy. If you are not sure whether a 1kW-class system matches your loads, call us and we will walk through your numbers with you.
