60W Portable Solar Panels: Carry-Out Power for 12V Batteries

Portable solar panels in the 60W class are the ones you lean against a truck tire or prop on a picnic table for a few hours, then stow. At 60W they are sized to keep a 12V deep-cycle or lithium battery charged over a weekend of light use: LED lights, a radio, phone charging and a fan. They are not a substitute for a roof array, but they are the cheapest way to add sun to a trailer or boat that has none.

This collection has two products, both from Rich Solar: the MEGA 60W 12V Portable Monocrystalline Solar Panel at $59.99 and the same panel in black at $63.99. Both are currently sold out; they return to stock regularly, and everything below applies when they do.

How to choose a 60W portable solar panel

  • Glass or fabric. The MEGA 60 is a framed panel with tempered glass and an aluminum frame, weighing 11.5 lb. That is heavier than a fabric folder of the same wattage but far more resistant to hail, dropped tools and years of UV, and it can be bolted down if you decide it should live on a roof after all.
  • Daily harvest. Plan on 60W times four to five sun hours, roughly 240 to 300Wh per day in summer, less in winter. A 12V fridge needs more than that; a trolling-motor battery, camper house battery or shed light circuit does not.
  • Controller. A 12V panel connected directly to a battery will overcharge it. Any small 12V PWM or MPPT controller works with a 60W panel; a portable solar panel kit is simply the panel plus a controller and cables, and you can assemble one for less than a branded bundle.
  • Color and heat. The black-frame version costs $4 more and looks cleaner on a dark truck or boat. Performance is the same 60W rating; both are silicon monocrystalline cells behind glass.
  • Expansion. Two MEGA 60 panels in parallel give 120W through the same 12V controller, which is the point where a compact compressor fridge becomes realistic in summer.

Setup and usage tips

  • Check the numbers first. The Solar Kit Calculator takes your loads and ZIP code and tells you whether one 60W solar panel covers the job or whether you are really in 100W to 200W territory.
  • Face south and tilt. Setting the panel at roughly your latitude and turning it once at midday captures most of what a fixed flat panel loses.
  • Keep cable runs short. A long thin extension between panel and battery loses a noticeable share of 60W; use the heaviest gauge you have and keep it under 20 feet.
  • Fuse the battery end. Put a small inline fuse on the positive lead near the battery so a pinched cable cannot cause a short.
  • Do not leave it face-down on gravel. Tempered glass survives a lot, but the frame corners and junction box are where a portable panel gets damaged in transit; store it in a padded sleeve or against a soft surface.

Frequently asked questions

Will a 60W panel charge a power station? Yes, if the station has a 12V-class solar input and you use the correct adapter. Expect slow charging: a 500Wh station needs roughly two sunny days from 60W. For faster refills, look at the 100W to 200W folding panels in our other collections.

How is this different from the 50W and 80W Rich Solar panels? The 50W MEGA is a rigid panel meant for permanent brackets, and the 80W MEGA FLEX is a flexible adhesive-mount module for curved roofs. The 60W is the portable option, framed and carried out when needed.

Are these the best portable solar panels for a camper? For a camper with a small 12V house battery and no roof array, they are the right size and price. If you run a fridge or charge e-bikes, you will want more wattage.

Both panels ship free to the mainland US from Rich Solar's partner warehouse when in stock, usually within a few business days, with 30-day returns. Call us if you want a restock estimate or help matching a controller.
