12V Solar Panel Kit Guide: Charging Kits vs Complete Systems

A 12v solar panel kit is the simplest way to put solar on anything that already runs on 12 volts: a travel trailer, a camper van, a boat, a hunting cabin or a shed with a battery and some LED lights. The panels, controller and, in the complete versions, the battery and inverter are matched, so you skip pairing Voc ratings, cable gauges and connectors yourself.

This collection holds five kits from Rich Solar and Sungold Power. In-stock options run from $800 for a two-panel charging kit that adds to your existing battery to $2,760 for an 800W complete system with a 200Ah lithium battery and a 3,000W inverter. Sungold Power's larger 12V kits are listed but currently sold out.

How to choose a 12V kit

  • Charging kit or complete kit. If your rig already has a house battery, the 400 Watt Solar Charging Kit with MPPT Controller adds two MEGA 200 panels and an MPPT charge controller to keep it full, with room for a third panel later. If you are starting from nothing, the Rich Solar 2000W 12V Complete Solar Kit bundles the same 400W of panels with a 100Ah ALPHA 1 battery (1.28kWh) and a 2,000W pure sine wave inverter.
  • Daily watt-hours. A compressor fridge, lights, water pump and phone charging in a trailer usually land between 800 and 1,500Wh a day. A 400W array covers that in decent sun; the 800W array in the RICH SOLAR 3000W 12V Complete Solar Kit handles a second fridge, a TV and cloudy stretches.
  • Inverter size. A 2,000W inverter runs a microwave or a coffee maker one at a time. The 3,000W inverter in the 800W kit runs both, or a small air conditioner for short periods from its 200Ah ALPHA 2 battery (2.56kWh).
  • Controller headroom. The 400W kits use a smaller MPPT controller; the 800W kit steps up to a 60A BRAVO 60. If you expect to add panels within a year, buy the larger controller now rather than replacing it.
  • 12V or 24V later. The charging kit's controller supports 12V and 24V banks, so it carries over if you rebuild at 24V; the complete kits are 12V systems end to end.

Setup and usage tips

  • Run the Solar Kit Calculator with your appliance list and ZIP code. It sizes battery, inverter and panels for your sun hours, and it will tell you whether 400W or 800W is the honest number for a 12 volt solar panel system in your state.
  • Measure the roof before choosing a kit. Four MEGA 200 panels need a long unshaded run; on a shorter trailer roof the 400W kit plus a ground-deployed third panel can be the better fit.
  • Keep the battery close to the inverter. At 12V a 3,000W inverter pulls heavy current, so short, thick cables and a fuse at the battery are not optional.
  • Plan for winter. Sun hours in northern states drop by half in December; a 200Ah battery covers the gap better than a 100Ah one.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 12 volt 100w solar panel enough for a trailer? On its own, only for maintaining a battery in storage. Running a fridge and lights daily takes 300 to 400W, which is why the smallest kit here starts at 400W.

Which are the best 12 volt solar panels for a kit? Rigid monocrystalline modules like the MEGA 200 used in every Rich Solar kit here. They mount permanently, handle weather and let you build the array in 200W steps.

Can I add a battery to the 400W charging kit later? Yes, that is what it is for. Pair it with any 12V or 24V battery and add an inverter if you need 120V outlets, or start with the complete kit and skip the extra shopping.

All kits ship free to the mainland US from our brand partner warehouses, usually within a few business days, with 30-day returns. Call us with your rig and appliance list and we will confirm which kit fits.
