Solar Panels for Motorhomes: Roof Kits, Briefcase Panels and Flexible Options

Solar panels for motorhomes do one job: keep the house battery charged while you are parked without hookups, so the fridge, pump, lights and furnace fan keep running without the generator. The right kit depends on where the panels will live. A Class A or C with flat roof space takes rigid panels wired through a charge controller; a rig with a curved fiberglass roof takes a flexible panel; and if you would rather not drill anything, a folding briefcase panel sets up beside the coach and packs away when you leave.

This collection holds 7 products from Rich Solar, Sungold Power, Anker and Bluetti, from a $169 flexible 100W panel to an $800 400W roof kit with an MPPT controller. Everything here is in stock.

Rich Solar 400 watt motorhome solar panel kit with two 200W panels and 40 amp MPPT charge controller

How to choose a motorhome solar panel kit

  • Daily draw sets the wattage. A motorhome with a 12V compressor fridge, LED lights, water pump and phone charging typically uses 600 to 1,200Wh a day. The Rich Solar 400 Watt Solar Charging Kit with 40 Amp MPPT Controller pairs two 200W panels with a controller that runs 12V or 24V banks and covers that load on a sunny day. The SunGoldPower 200W 48V Monocrystalline Solar Panels Kit suits lighter use for $350.
  • Roof shape. Flat roof with clear space: rigid panels. Curved roof or a slide-out top: the Rich Solar MEGA 100W FLEX weighs 4.8 lb, bends to follow the surface and mounts flush.
  • Drill or no drill. The Rich Solar MEGA 200W Briefcase Portable Solar Charging Kit has a waterproof 20A controller built in, so it clips to the battery and works with no roof penetration. Its 100W sibling with a 10A controller costs $230.
  • Power station or house battery. If your motorhome runs off an Anker SOLIX or Bluetti station rather than a wired battery bank, use that brand's folding panel: the Anker SOLIX PS400 400W or the Bluetti PV350 350W, both 48V panels made for their own stations.

Setup and usage tips

  • Size before you shop. The Solar Kit Calculator takes your appliance list and ZIP code and returns the panel, battery and inverter figures for your travel region.
  • Panels only charge; they do not store. If the house battery is a single tired lead-acid unit, upgrade it before adding 400W of panel or the extra power has nowhere to go.
  • Set the controller to the battery type. The 40A MPPT kit works on 12V or 24V and on lithium or lead-acid, but the profile has to be selected.
  • Leave an air gap under flexible panels where possible, and avoid running cable across a roof seam that flexes when the slide-outs move.
  • A briefcase panel can be moved toward the sun every few hours; roof panels cannot, so park with that in mind.
  • Shade from a roof AC unit on one panel of a series pair pulls both down. Wire roof panels in parallel if shading is unavoidable.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best solar panel for motorhome roofs with limited space? A 200W rigid panel gives the most output per mounting footprint in this collection, and the two-panel 400W kit is the most common full-time setup. If the roof is curved, the 100W FLEX is the only option that sits flat.

Will motorhome solar panels run the air conditioner? No. Roof solar in this range keeps the house battery topped up for DC loads and small AC loads through an inverter; a rooftop AC unit needs a generator or a large power station system.

Can I add panels later? Yes. The 400W kit is sold as expandable; with the briefcase kits, buy a second unit and run it to the same battery.

Every solar panel system for motorhome use here ships free to the mainland US from our brand partner warehouses, usually within a few business days, with 30-day returns. Call us with your rig's battery details and we will confirm the kit before you order.
