Hybrid Solar Inverter Buying Guide: Matching Watts, Voltage and Grid Mode

A hybrid solar inverter takes DC from panels and a battery bank and turns it into 120/240V household power, while also charging the battery from solar, the grid or a generator and switching between sources on its own. One unit replaces the separate charge controller, inverter, charger and transfer switch that older off-grid systems needed. It is the piece that decides how much of your house you can run, and for how long, when the utility drops out.

This collection holds 39 inverters from Sol-Ark, EG4, Rich Solar and APEX, from a 3,000W 24V unit at from $799 for a cabin or RV to the 18,000W Sol-Ark 18K at about $6,400 for a large home with central air.

Applying for a solar or battery rebate? Our guide to solar rebates by state lists the state credits, utility programs and battery incentives still open in 2026 - and most of them require a UL 1741 SB inverter like the ones in this collection.

EG4 6000XP 6,000W 48V off-grid hybrid solar inverter, transformer-free split-phase design

How to choose a hybrid inverter

  • Continuous output. Add the loads you expect to run at once. A cabin with a fridge, pump and lights fits inside the 3,000W Rich Solar NOVA MAX 3K (6,000W surge for 5 seconds). A typical family home with an electric range or heat pump wants 8,000 to 13,000W, the range covered by the EG4 12kPV 8,000W and the EG4 FlexBOSS18 at 13,000W.
  • Battery voltage. Nearly everything here is 48V; the NOVA MAX 3K is the 24V exception. Pick the inverter for the bank you own, or buy both together so they match.
  • Solar input capacity. This caps your future array. The EG4 6000XP accepts 8,000W across two MPPT trackers for from $1,499, while the FlexBOSS21 takes 21,000W over three trackers and five strings. Check maximum string voltage too: the Sol-Ark 12K lists 500V.
  • Grid-tied, off-grid or both. The Sol-Ark 12K, 15K and 18K, the FlexBOSS line, the 12kPV and the UL 1741 Rich Solar NOVA 12K all work tied to the utility or fully off-grid. The APEX-6.5K and APEX-10K are off-grid units with separate grid and generator inputs wired side by side.
  • Scaling. The 6000XP parallels up to 16 units, so a small system can grow. The FlexBOSS21 plugs into EG4's GridBOSS hub for whole-home management.

Sizing tips

  • Start with the Solar Kit Calculator. Enter your appliances and ZIP code and it returns an inverter size along with the battery and array to go with it.
  • Size for surge, not just running watts. A well pump or AC compressor can draw two to three times its nameplate for a moment; the Sol-Ark 18K's 36kW 10-second surge is built for exactly that.
  • Check the battery's discharge rating against the inverter. A 10,000W inverter on a bank that can only supply 100A at 48V will trip on heavy loads.
  • Decide on indoor or outdoor mounting early. The 12kPV and FlexBOSS21 carry NEMA 4X enclosures for outdoor walls; the NOVA MAX 3K belongs inside.
  • If you plan to sell power back or want permitted grid interaction, choose a UL 1741 listed unit such as the NOVA 12K, or the UL 9540 rated FlexBOSS models, and confirm with your utility before buying.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best hybrid inverter for a 2,000 sq ft house? Most homes that size run well on 8,000 to 12,000W. The EG4 12kPV, Rich Solar NOVA 12K (10,000W continuous) and Sol-Ark 12K all fit, with the Sol-Ark offering 15kW of solar input if the roof is large.

Which EG4 hybrid inverter should I pick? The 6000XP is the budget 48V unit and parallels for growth. The 12kPV adds outdoor rating and 8,000W output. The FlexBOSS18 and FlexBOSS21 are the whole-home options with 4G or GridBOSS integration and a 10-year manufacturer warranty.

Do I need a separate charge controller? No. Every hybrid inverter for sale here has MPPT solar charging built in, from the 80A charger in the NOVA MAX 3K to the three trackers in the FlexBOSS21.
