Solar Inverter Buying Guide: Off-Grid, Hybrid and Split-Phase

A solar inverter turns DC power from your battery bank and panels into the 120V or 120/240V AC your house, cabin or RV runs on. The hybrid units in this collection do more than convert: most include MPPT solar charging, a battery charger and an automatic transfer between grid, generator and battery, so one box replaces three.

The collection holds 56 pure sine wave inverters from EG4, Sol-Ark, Sungold Power, Rich Solar and BigBattery, from a 3,000W 12V inverter charger for from $799 up to the Sol-Ark 15K all-in-one for from $5,650. Most are 48V hybrids sized for whole-home backup or full off-grid living; a few 12V and 24V models cover vans, boats and small cabins.

How to choose an inverter

  • Battery voltage first. The inverter must match your bank. For a 12V RV bank, the Rich Solar NOVA SUPERCHARGER 3K 12V Inverter Charger adds a transfer switch that swaps between shore power, generator and battery in about 20 milliseconds. For 24V, the Rich Solar NOVA MAX 3K 24V Hybrid Inverter bundles an 80A MPPT charger. Everything 6,000W and up here is 48V.
  • Continuous watts. Add up the loads that run at the same time. A well pump, central air and a range together push a household past 6,000W; that is where the 8,000W and 12,000W class comes in.
  • 120V or 120/240V split-phase. Anything with a 240V circuit (dryer, well pump, EV charger, central AC) needs split-phase output. The EG4 6000XP, both Sungold Power split-phase units and the Sol-Ark models all deliver it.
  • PV input and MPPT count. Check how much panel wattage the inverter can accept. The 6000XP takes up to 8,000W across two MPPTs; the EG4 FlexBOSS21 accepts 21,000W across three, which matters if you plan a large roof array.
  • Grid-tied, off-grid or both. The EG4 12kPV and FlexBOSS models run tied to the utility, fully off-grid, or in between. The APEX-6.5K and 6000XP are off-grid units with a grid or generator input for charging.

Sizing tips

  • Use the Solar Kit Calculator. It takes your appliance list and ZIP code and returns a battery, inverter and panel size, which is the right starting point before comparing eg4 inverters against Sungold Power or Sol-Ark.
  • Leave headroom. Motors in pumps and compressors draw several times their running watts at start. If your steady load is 4,000W, a 6,000W unit is a safer buy than a 5,000W one.
  • Plan for parallel. The EG4 6000XP parallels up to 16 units and the Sungold Power split-phase models support parallel operation, so you can start with one and add a second later instead of oversizing on day one.
  • Outdoor mounting needs a rated enclosure. The EG4 12kPV carries a NEMA 4X rating; most other units belong in a garage or utility room.
  • Generator owners should look at dual AC input. The APEX-6.5K accepts grid and generator at once, which simplifies wiring in a rural inverter solar system.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a hybrid and an off-grid inverter? A hybrid can export to or import from the grid and still run off-grid when it drops. An off-grid inverter never feeds the grid; it may accept grid or generator power only to charge the battery.

Do I need 240V? Only if you have 240V appliances. A cabin or RV on 120V is fine with the Rich Solar NOVA units; a full house almost always needs split-phase.

Can I mix an eg4 inverter with another brand's battery? Often yes, but closed-loop communication and warranty support are simplest with matched brands. Call us with your battery model before ordering.

All inverters ship free to the mainland US from brand partner warehouses, usually in a few business days, with 30-day returns. If you are torn between two models, phone us with your load list and we will work through it together.
